A week at Hanalei Makai Hale
Reviewed on 2023-11-26 by , Oceanside, CA USThe house was very clean and well- furnished and nicely maintained and decorated. The landscaping is beautiful. The outdoor shower has plenty of hot water. Internet connection and smart TV were both good.
There were six of us (3 couples) and we had plenty of room and private spaces. The house had most everything you need for a good time at the beach - umbrellas, sand chairs, two soft top surfboards, boogie boards, sand toys and a cart to pull stuff to the beach.
Though not a great time of the year for snorkeling on the north shore, we did take a couple day trips to Haena/Tunnels and it would have been good to have some snorkeling gear.
It's a short walk into Hanalei Town for restaurants and entertainment.
We liked the large well-equipped kitchen. We had everything we needed except for a large pot. We called the property management company and they quickly had one delivered.
Only complaint: we had a few wasps flying around the property and some snuck in and caused some unwanted excitement. They should find and remove the nest for the next guests.
I highly recommend Hanalei Makai Hale. We would love to return again next year.

Maybe the most Beautiful place on Earth
Reviewed on 2022-12-13 by Jonathan L. , Calgary, AB CanadaMaybe the most beautiful place on Earth
Reviewed on 2022-11-24 by Jonathan L. , Calgary, AB, Canada CanadaWe stayed at Hanalei Makai Hale for 18 days in Nov/Dec 2022 with my two young children, and our parents.
The house was perfect for our needs!!
Three very sound-proof bedrooms with comfortable beds and clean linens. It also has a beautiful central living space with an open concept and vaulted ceilings.
Although the house is close to adjacent properties, it is surrounded by beautiful flowering trees, and it feels like you are in the jungle. You can sitting on the back lanai with nice views of the mountains. And the front lanai has a large outdoor table for dinner.
We comfortably had friends over to our place for dinner parties.
It is a 2 minute walk to Pavillion Beach Park, and a 10-minute walk up to the Hanalei Pier at Black Pot Beach --- which is a great calm beach even during high surf on the winter. Great access for surfing (either at the Point, the pier or at Pine Trees).
It is less than a 10-minute walk to the centre of Hanalei town. So it was great to be able to walk to the food trucks and shopping.
The owners were so generous! They left a Thanksgiving dinner in the fridge for us. It was a lovely gesture.
There are also tons of beach accessories at the rental - Tommy Bahama beach chairs, two soft-top surf boards, boogie boards, a kid's wagon, buckets, shovels and other beach toys.
This was a really nice perk for us!!
The staff at Kauai vacation rentals were good to deal with. When one of the fans stopped working, they had it fixed the next day!
Overall - I would highly recommend staying here without hesitation.
The only negatives: 1. Water pressure is low from all taps (this may be similar at other rentals). 2. Kitchen pots/pans could use replacing. 3. Kauai is very expensive (especially for Canadians). Although i think compared to other comparable properties, Hanalei Makai Hale is great

We Love Hanalei Makai Hale!
Reviewed on 2022-10-27 by Jeanne H. , San Luis Obispo, CAOver many years, we have stayed at four different properties on the North Shore. Hanalei Makai Hale is, by far, the best place we have ever stayed! It is so beautiful and comfortable, and the layout of the house is well thought out. We loved the close proximity to Hanalei Bay and we were on the beach and in the 81 degree water every day (in addition to visiting other beaches like Secret Beach and Lumahai Beach). We appreciated the nice collection of beach towels & chairs - all in great shape. We also loved the treehouse feel, and the lanai - where we ate every meal, listening to the birds singing and chatting, and the geckos "chirping". Thank you so much for offering such a lovely, inviting, homey hale. We loved and savored every moment. And we will be back!

There are wrap-around lanais, interior and exterior fans, and walls of windows and sliding doors that keep the home cool, so we did not miss air conditioning. We enjoyed walks on the beach each morning and relaxing on the back lanai with views of the lush mountains every evening. The small town, with a few bars, restaurants and shops, was also walking distance. Tip: For groceries, if you can’t hit Costco by the airport, opt for Foodland in Princeville rather than Big Save Market in Hanalei for quality and variety. The house itself was clean, well-designed and comfortable. And the owners were FABULOUS. Thank you again, David and Karen, for the special birthday gift for my dad's 80th. If we are lucky enough to return to Kauai one day, this is where we will stay.

Otherwise, located 1/2 block from beach access and 5-10 minute walk to heart of Hanalei. All living space on second floor. Modernized kitchen and decor with a very nice large, shaded front deck with a brand new grill on it. Dinners outside every night. Our kids range from 11 to 18 years and this will go down as one of our best family vacations ever. We spent 3 days in Maui and then came to spend a week in Kauai on the north shore. My husband and I honeymooned here in Princeville 20 years ago and we were so excited to share it with our kids. It was important to us that we went somewhere not overwhelmed by tourists and somewhere where we could walk to the beach and also to amenities when needed. Hanalei is so charming and filled with the nicest people. We enjoyed meeting many of the shop and restaurant owners and even hung with some on the beach! We loved how the entire house could open up for the fresh ocean breezes and the sounds of the island all accompanied by gorgeous views. We did not miss air conditioning or electronics! We hiked, swam, snorkeled, kayaked, boogie boarded and more! We ate the most amazing local food at the food trucks and restaurants. We found the best little gifts and honey at the Saturday Farmer's Market. We read and napped on the amazing lanais. Queen's Bath was one of our favorite day activities and also kayaking on the Wailua (Kayak Wailua) with the hike to the stunning waterfall. We did not want to go home! Reviewed on 2022-02-27 by Kyle Z. , Seattle, WAI don't usually leave reviews but felt compelled to share my experience for this unique home. This home is very well maintained with everything you could need and located between the beach and town of Hanalei. We started most mornings watching the sunrise from the southeast facing Lanai, then made breakfast in the kitchen that had everything we needed and then some. Then we'd usually walk to the beach (about 2-3 minutes) for a morning swim or to check out the sea turtles swimming back out to the ocean near the pier in Hanalei bay. Because the beach was so close, we liked that we could spend shorter periods in the sun if needed, and come and go as many times as we please. When coming back from the beach, there is an outdoor shower with cold or hot water for rinsing off that is very convenient for keeping sand out of the house. Then we'd take the 2-3 minute walk into the town of Hanalei for a coffee. After visiting most towns on the island, Hanalei was definitely our favorite! They have everything you need with lots of different restaurants and shops and a fresh seafood market. In the evening we'd hang out on the sunset facing the lanai or take a short walk to the beach for sunset, and later at night you can see the stars and milky way galaxy if you let your eyes adjust long enough! Other items that I appreciated were the finishes used throughout the home. This owner of this home did it right using high quality materials and furniture throughout. The landscaping was also well maintained. Mahalo to the owner for maintaining such a thoughtfully appointed home.

Secluded Oasis
Reviewed on 2021-06-04 by Laurie H. , Austin, TXThis was a great house just 2 minutes from the beach with every amenity you could want (except AC!) It did get rather hot during the day if we had not been home to open the windows and doors, but the house cooled down quickly at night with doors and windows opened. Our kids were a little freaked out by the idea that anyone could enter the home with the door screens open at night, so it might be nice to add some security locks to the screens but we had no safety issues. Our kids were older - I wouldn't necessarily recommend this for toddlers who might wander in the night. The location was ideal, very near the beach, and a 10 minute walk to lots of restaurants and shops. If you choose to stay in Hanalei make sure you know about the road closure times and plan accordingly - that was very inconvenient. Overall we loved the house, would definitely stay here again, and highly recommend it.

This house is always immaculate and the kitchen is stocked with everything you could ever imagine needing… just like home. Fresh paint on the interior walls and we thought they were perfect last year when we visited.
New living room furniture, very comfy and we love the sheer and airy white curtains between the living room and the Lanai.
The artwork in this house is incredible! This year there was a new fish sculpture done in glass in the entry, it is so beautiful! We noticed new art in the bedrooms as well.
Last year the kitchen was completely remodeled with Quartz counters, awesome backsplash and a very elegant pocket door (to name a few). This year we noticed the new matching black dishwasher which completes the kitchen.
The furniture on the Lanai is very comfortable and we enjoy sitting out there listening to the birds. All of the plants on the property are maturing and we noticed a couple of new Orchids in the palm tree. We’re anxious to see how they are when we return next year.
The location is just perfect. Just steps to beautiful Hanalei Bay and many shops and restaurant’s close by in downtown Hanalei only a few minutes away.
We are looking forward to our stay next year as this feels like our home away from home.

Each time I go back the owners have added more improvements; upgraded both bathrooms, new living room furniture, new twin beds, wall art, a beautiful kitchen counter top and glass tiles on the kitchen walls. The ocean is right across the street, and it is a very short walk to the restaurants and shopping in Hanalei. All of North Shore Kauai is such a beautiful, unique place to vacation. Perfect location (and home!)
Reviewed on 2017-12-06 by Sarah H. , Irvine, CAWe absolutely loved this house! Our group was 4 adults and 1 baby for 8 days, and the house was perfect for us. Location-wise, it can't be beat -- steps from the beach, but still tucked away for privacy. We were a 5ish min walk to town (shops, coffee, grocery & restaurants). Last time we visited Kauai, we were in Princeville, but staying in Hanalei was a much different experience -- and we loved it. Laid back, easy-going and comfortable. Also, close to hiking the Napali Coast or heading down to kid-friendly Anini Beach.
All of the living space is on the second floor. There's a convenient outdoor shower downstairs so you can wash off the sand and mud you accumulate when you're outside all day. Beautiful lanai with a BBQ/grill in front of the home with a table & seating for six. We spent a lot of time out here in the morning and evenings -- enjoying breakfast & dinners. There's another lanai in the back with a beautiful mountain view. Inside, the floor plan works really well for families. Nice-sized master bedroom with a big closet & bathroom (walk in shower) on one side and then two bedrooms & another bathroom (tub) on the other side. There are small patios off each bedroom, and the entire interior seems like it was recently remodeled. Furnishings are comfortable and plenty of storage space. Nice sized table off the kitchen to eat indoors as well. Beautiful kitchen and laundry area. Lots of towels (bath & beach) in the hallway linen closet. We had everything we needed for 8 days.
This might seem minor but we found it to be incredibly convenient that the house has a keypad instead of house keys -- it meant that our group could easily plan activities and make adjustments without worrying about who was carrying the only set of keys.
We can't wait to go back!
Here's how to fall in love with Hawaii
Reviewed on 2017-10-27 by Valli H. , Los Angeles, CAThis pretty, pristine and perfectly located Hanalei house helped us realize our dream tropical-island vacation. For a group of first-time visitors to Kauai, having such a well-outfitted home located steps from the beach added incredible ease to our trip--a girlfriends' getaway.
We could walk to the awesome beach in less time than it takes to find your car at a mall. Even better--the owners included a welcome basket of artisan chocolate, spices and discount coupons to guide our stay, plus a curated list of great local dining and shopping spots.
Everything inside the house looked new, felt meticulously maintained and anticipated a visitor's needs, including labels and instructions everywhere. Add to that the cool electronic front door lock that meant we didn't need to pick up or keep track of keys.
Three generously sized bedrooms gave us ample space and privacy, while the open floor plan provided a nice gathering space for hanging out, making meals or watching movies. The arrangement of a master bedroom and bath on one wing, and the other with two bedrooms with a king and two twins makes it a great family or multi-generational choice, too.
To be honest, previous Hawaii trips to Oahu and other islands felt more like a frustrating slog through Any City, USA, but with more palm trees. Located really close to the waves and Hanalei's shopping district, the house became the centerpiece of our completely changed impressions of Hawaii. We woke up to pink-purple sunrise views framed by exotic tropical plants. We had leisurely breakfasts of farmers' market tropical fruit and Kauai coffee in the kitchen, which had everything you ever needed--pro knives, trays, BBQ utensils (and an outdoor grill) and wine glasses. We picked up sushi at the fish market, walked a few blocks for ice cream (and used the $5 discount coupon), toted the house's boogie boards to the beach and rinsed in the outdoor shower.
A well-supplied laundry room meant we packed lighter and returned with suitcases of clean clothes.
When we discovered the joys of sipping wine and eating sushi on the lanai (the classic open-roofed porches that surround the house), it was tough to get us to leave the cushiony outdoor chairs.
More surprising, the house is filled with original art that added to the experience of being in Hawaii. After touring several luxury resorts on the island, we all agreed that this house was more luxurious and a much better value and experience. We're already planning a return!

We have two young children, and we were easily able to get them back and forth from the beach each day without needing a car or stroller. I found the beds to be incredibly comfortable as well. You can tell that the owners of this home have worked hard to make it a special place to stay! I can't wait to stay here again!!!
Steps from wonderful Hanalei Bay
Reviewed on 2015-06-28 by Jan R. , Marana, AZThis is a beautiful home just steps from wonderful Hanalei Bay. The house offers everything you can possibly want for a wonderful vacation - comfort, ease, beautiful surroundings. All of the rooms are so inviting and spacious, and the kitchen has every convenience one could want. The two large lanais (one on either side of the house) are beautifully furnished for eating, relaxing, entertaining - the perfect places to start and end each day. The bedrooms are very comfortable (including the beds!) and well furnished with plenty of linens and towels. There are 2 king size rooms and 1 with twin beds; the house easily accommodates 6 people comfortably. Downstairs there is a great outdoor shower with foot shower, and tons of beach toys, umbrellas, chairs, etc. And it's just a short walk to the stores and restaurants in the town of Hanalei. I love this home and location - it was everything I hoped for and I'll definitely stay there again very soon.
We loved our stay!

Wake up in a Hanalei postcard setting at this extraordinary 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom beach home.
You may think you’re dreaming when you open your eyes to picture-perfect views of Hanalei’s lush greenery and vivid blue skies outside your bedroom windows. Located in a residential stretch of ocean-view Weke Road, this upscale 2,600-square-foot home sits among North Shore's high valued estates.
Tucked into a tropical grove, the house is a quick stroll from the velvet sand and gentle surf of Hanalei Bay. In the distance, look for the serpent-shaped mountain that inspired the song, “Puff the Magic Dragon.” You’re also easy walking distance to Hanalei’s charming downtown. There you’ll find everything from artisan coffee and chocolate, to sophisticated, healthy cuisine, to classic island cocktails at the iconic Tahiti Nui, a favorite local lounge and a location for the George Clooney film, “The Descendants.”
At Hanalei Makai Hale, you’ll be immersed in beauty, indoors and out. Ascend the stairs to arrive at a custom, beveled-glass door that hints at the treasures inside. The foyer’s impressive glass sea sculptures introduce the carefully curated art collection, including original island paintings, carvings and tile work. The breezy lanais will beckon you outdoors into comfy chairs for morning coffee, an afternoon smoothie or chilled wine at sunset, to watch the sky turn vivid crimson.
The open floor plan encourages an easy flow between the kitchen, living room and dining room. Numerous lanai sliding glass doors and louvered windows welcome cooling trade winds and filtered daylight. Spacious bedrooms on opposite wings provide ample privacy for groups of couples, friends or families of up to six people.
The master suite has a king-sized bed, walk-in closet, dressing area, adjoining bathroom and access to the backyard lanai. From the front guest room’s king bed and private lanai, you can gaze at the ocean or every-shade-of-green terrain. The second guest bedroom offers cozy quiet and two twin beds that can convert to a king.
On the breakfast bar, find a gift basket of local artisan chocolate, Hawaiian spices and discount coupons that will ease your introduction to favorite Kauai treats and adventures. Outside treat yourself to a hot-water rinse in the enclosed open-air shower.
In no time, you’ll be living like a local, stocking up on impossibly fresh sushi and shopping the farmers markets for exotic fruits and vegetables that you stash in the Sub-Zero refrigerator. With a kitchen outfitted for the most discerning chefs, you’ll be turning out quick meals on the barbecue gas grill with ease.
In anticipation of our guests’ every need, the electronic front door locks require no keys to pick up, share or return. The kitchen is fully stocked with shopping bags, basic seasonings and cleaning supplies. The laundry room features an oversized washer, dryer and large pantry. Ease into adventures on land and water, guided by our booklet that lists favorite excursions, restaurants and shopping destinations. Throughout the home, labels and instructions ease familiarity with the house and appliances. You won’t lack for indoor entertainment with a large flat-screen television and high-speed Wi-Fi.
Inside and out, you’ll find the kind of cushiony furnishings that cradle you after a long day of surfing, swimming, hiking or power-shopping.
